BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated by dividing weight (kg) by height (m) squared. It's an international standard for measuring obesity. For Asians, normal BMI is 18.5-22.9, overweight is 23+, and obese is 25+.
Example: Height 170cm, Weight 65kg → BMI = 65 ÷ (1.7)² = 22.5 (Normal)

Don't judge health by BMI alone. Athletes with high muscle mass can be healthy despite high BMI. Normal BMI with high visceral fat means 'skinny fat'. Measure waist circumference and body fat percentage together for accurate health assessment. Waist over 90cm (men) or 85cm (women) indicates abdominal obesity.

Use BMI 22 as a reference. For example, at 170cm height, ideal weight is about 63.6kg (1.7 × 1.7 × 22). Normal range (BMI 18.5-22.9) is 53.5-66.2kg.

For Asians, BMI 23+ is classified as overweight. This differs from Western standards (25+). Asians tend to have more visceral fat at the same BMI, so stricter criteria apply.

Yes! BMI only considers weight, so high muscle mass can show high BMI even without obesity. Body fat percentage measurement (InBody) is more accurate. Standard is 15-20% for men, 20-25% for women.

Ages 2-20 use the same formula but different interpretation. Results are evaluated by percentile among same age/gender. 85-94th percentile is overweight, 95th+ is obese.
Health risks (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease) increase sharply at BMI 25+ (Obese Class I). BMI 30+ is severe obesity requiring active management. BMI below 18.5 also risks malnutrition and weakened immunity.
